Name Variation | John Krasting was also known as John Krastin. Family lore has him arriving in the US by jumping ship in San Francisco. He was in the Latvian merchant marine, born in Riga, Latvia. Krasting is derived from Krastmal (?) which means "bank of the river".
On Nov 21, 2000, I checked the Latvian internet site and Elizabeth Rutens said that his name was probably Krastin's' (the letter s would have a diacritical on top of it, and would be pronounced 'sh'. There would also be a diacritical under the 'n') . "Krasts" in Latvian means shore or river bank and Krastin's' is the diminutive.
